1.) Take cushions off of sofa. Determine the problem. Why
will the old sleeper mechanism not open? Is there a broken part on the frame
of the mechanism? Is the decking on the mechanism torn? Are there springs
missing? Examine the sofa mattress. Is the mattress the source of the problem
due to a tear or protruding spring coils?
2.) Once you have determined that the sleeper mechanism is the source of the
problem, remove the mattress from the sofa. Examine the mattress. How thick
is the mattress? This determines which mechanism is needed to make the necessary
replacement. There are two sizes of mattresses: 4 inches thick and 6 inches
thick. The mechanism size corresponds to the mattress size.
4 inch thick mattress = Hickory Springs 90068 model or Leggett
& Platt 2568 model (Queen)
6 inch thick mattress = Hickory Springs 90568 model or Leggett & Platt
2568 model (Queen)
4 inch thick mattress = Hickory Springs 90060 model or Leggett & Platt
2560 model (Full)
6 inch thick mattress = Hickory Springs 90560 model or Leggett & Platt
3560 model (Full)
· (There is a label on the side of the mechanism that indicates the
model number)
3.) Once the mattress has been removed and you have determined
that you have the correct mechanism, slide the sofa away from the wall and
stand it up on its end. Make sure that the sofa is stable. Some sofas have
large rolled arms which may require you to place a block underneath it for
support.
4.) Take the screws out of the old sleeper mechanism. Before you do this,
take a magic marker and draw a line along the edge of the mechanism closest
to the bottom edge of the sofa. This gives you a reference point for adjusting
the height on the new mechanism.
Note: Depending on the manufacturer of the sofa, the screws
used may not be a standard phillips-head screw size. It is a good idea to
have several types of drill bits just in case.
Note: If any of the old screws are stripped out, put plenty
of pressure behind the drill and try a couple of times to remove the screw.
If this does not work, you can try a product called ‘strip-out’
which may provide a few additional attempts. If this is not available you
have two options:
a. Take a chisel and hammer and try to break the head off the screw
b. Remove all other screws. Then, take the claw end of a hammer and work it
up under the mechanism near the area of the screw and lift up. The pressure
of the mechanism lifting upward will cause the screw head to break.
5.) Once all the screws have been removed, take the old mechanism out of the
sofa cavity. BE CAREFUL- Broken parts from the old mechanism may
tear the sofa fabric. Remove the old mechanism from the bottom side of the
sofa. This will greatly reduce the possibility of tearing the sofa fabric.
6.) Move the old mechanism away from the area in which you are working.
7.) Place the new mechanism in the sofa cavity. How does it fit? There should
only be a couple of inches space from top to bottom. If this space is too
great for the screw to reach the wood, you may have the wrong size mechanism.
Queen sleeper sofa inside dimensions = 68” top to bottom
Full sleeper sofa inside dimensions = 60” top to bottom
8.) Push mechanism as far toward the front of the sofa as
possible. Put one screw in the front hole of the mechanism (top and bottom).
Don’t worry at this point about getting the height of the mechanism
the same at the top and the bottom. You only want to make sure that the mechanism
is pushed as far forward as possible.
9.) Take off the two wires that are holding the mechanism closed. Open the
mechanism so that you have access to the screws at the back of the mechanism
(top and bottom). Try to make the back of the mechanism line up with the magic
marker reference line drawn in step 4.
10.)Go back to the two screws (top and bottom) at the front of the mechanism
and adjust the height so it matches up with the reference line.
11.) Lay the sofa down on the floor and look at it. Is the front rail of the
mechanism level with the front rail of the sofa? This is very important.
If needed, stand the sofa back up and adjust the front two screws either higher
or lower.
12.) Go to the back two screws (top and bottom) and adjust them so that they
are the same height as the front screws. For example, the bottom of the mechanism
on all four corners should be the same distance from the bottom of the sofa
(2”, 3”, 3.5”, etc.)
13.) Lay the sofa down and try to open it. If the unit hits the inside back
of the sofa, drop the back two screws down until the unit will close safely.
Keep your measurements (top and bottom) even.
14.) If the mechanism hits the front rail of the sofa, the entire mechanism
needs to be moved back one inch. If you do this, make sure the mechanism does
not hit the outside back of the sofa.
15.) If everything looks good, stand sofa up and put in remaining screws.
16.) Lay sofa down, pull out mechanism and replace mattress and cushions.
Close mechanism and push sofa back against the wall.
** plastic spacer blocks of various sizes are available free of charge. These blocks hammer into the bottom of the mechanism to make the height of the sofa front rail perfectly level with the mechanism front rail.
